NLP Master Practitioner found guilty of misconduct – AGAIN!

This appeared in yesterdays Dominion Post.  NLP Master Practitioner Damian Peters, formally from Wellington, has been found guilty of serious professional misconduct.

Sad to see that this is not the first time.  I recall seeing a similar article back in early 2007 which involved the exploitation of a female sexual abuse victim.  The recent case is a little too similar for my liking.  Any form of alternative healing where this happens can quickly be brought into disrepute.

In August of 2007, months after the decision by the Health and Disabilities Commissioner was made public  Damian Peters could be found giving a presentation to the Auckland NLP group (for those that don’t know the NZANLP has regional groups throughout the country).  To me this indicates the NZANLP has failed to act in accordance with its code of ethics.

Damian Peters has brought shame upon the practice of NLP.  It is UNACCEPTABLE that he continues unimpeded.

Within NZ, he can continue without practice insurance, association membership, or even it seems appropriate standards of care.  Alternative natural healing is not legislated or controled here.  There is however one group of people that can stop him practicing.  All it would take is the majority of the NLP community in NZ making a concious decision to stop refering clients.  Whether or not NLPers have the integrity to do so remains to be seen.

Live by your code.

Blessings,

Keri Eagan

    Keri,
I think that people who violate their clients trust deserve to be punished.

  2. That’s kind of scary. I am a hypnotherapist but I don’t know NLP. I’ve only heard about its power, and it’s pretty impressive! I left hypnotherapy and went into the childcare / babysitting field so I never got to learning NLP. I look forward to reading more.

  3. As a general rule, once people have taken advantage of the trust inherent in a position, like a teacher or trainer, they should be barred from further practice. That being said, once someone is known to have a certain propensity, if you still choose to attend their training or events that should be ok.

I am too unfamiliar with this guy or the situation to state an opinion, but if his conduct is unbecoming then he should be stripped of his license.

  5. Wow, that is disturbing if the allegations are accurate. NLP is powerful stuff but regardless of what modality was being used with the client lines were seriously crossed and the person should be punished accordingly.

  6. Since I could rememeber NLP has be decribed as a sword and to use it ethically. It’s unfortunaly that a con artist have access to it.

  8. I must have left out a step last time because I’m not up there. So I’m repeating myself now.

Stories like this cause me to ask the same question when I hear them: what’s wrong with the men in this country?

I’m not male bashing, after all we are just better, but there is something when men do these things and nothing happens, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

  9. Hi Keri,

I was unfamiliar with NZ’s group and their code of ethics. Who is the enforcer of their code of ethics?

Hi April, Unfortunately in answer to your question the NZANLP enforces their code of ethics. I can see structural problems with the organisation which need to be changed for saftey reasons, and before the public considers them a trusted name. They are:

    - introduction of “obligation to report”. Currently the NZANLP doesn’t require members to report a suspected breach of ethics.
    - naming of members who are asked to leave the association (curiously absent from the complaints process). I heard rumors that the afformentioned practitioner had been asked to leave. When I enquired if that was the case I was told verbally there were no records (this was in Sept 2006). From the recent Health and Disablities investigation we can see that the NZANLP has indicated that this practitioner left the association in April 2004 (by coincidence a few months before Ms A sort treatment). So they found their record?? Perhaps the NZANLP didn’t realise it, but in the PREVIOUS case against the same practitioner is on public record. In that case Mr Peters indicates he was a member, and I quote, “up until the end of 2004″. OK, so maybe he meant the end of the FINANCIAL year. Yeah right, that must be it.
    - a seperate standing ethics committee. When I realised the public record conflicted not only with what I’d heard withing the NLP community, but also with what was on public record I looked through the complaints process. Turns out the secretary and president = the ethics committee. In other words if key people on the committee do something that looks dodgy there is no one else to deal with it appropriately. I suspect a misguided effort to protect their friend and collegue would go uncorrected and may even be repeated without a standing ethics committee. Failing this, at least two of the five committee members should be members of the NZAC, or have a strong theraputic background in a field outside of NLP.
    - improving intake process. Currently if you are trained by a legit NLP trainer, you can be a member as long as you agree to comply with the code of ethics. Hopefully someone would check you hadn’t been booted out of another organisation with a similar code. Hopefully.

The NZANLP was set up to help keep standards in training, practice, and to promote NLP. I hope they continue to remain focused on that outcome and look forward to supporting them once the above crucial changes have been made.

WOW! That is shocking. Is this a case of one slipping through the cracks in an otherwise solid system or is this endemic of the NZANLP?

    Keri,

Sad to see this sort of incident. Does not reflecxt well on the NLP in general unfortunately.
